REASON FOR REVIEW

Penal Code Section 925a authorizes the Grand Jury to conduct inquires into the operation and management of law enforcement agencies within the county.

BACKGROUND

Ione is an incorporated city. Ione Police Department is sanctioned by the State of California Peace Officer's Standards of Training.

METHODOLOGY

1. The Ione City Manager and the Police Chief were interviewed.
2. Grants presently being implemented by the Ione Police Department were reviewed.

FACTS

1. The Ione Police Department receives various grants, two of which are implemented by the Sheriff's Department since they are countywide grants.
2. The Ione Police Department receives two grants from the State of California. These grants are administered by the Ione Police Department. These grants provide salaries and staff for the Police Department.
3. The Ione Police Department was audited this year by the State of California Criminal Justice Planning Commission as well as an independent audit team in the implementation of the grants.

CONCLUSIONS

Since no irregularities were found by state and independent audits, no further efforts were made to audit the Ione Police Department's grants.
